FAQs

Below are answers to some of the commonly asked questions about credential evaluations.

Why do I need my credentials evaluated?

In the United States, engineers and surveyors must be licensed to offer their services to the public. Those seeking licensure apply to the licensing board in the state or U.S. territory in which they plan to practice. To obtain a license, they must meet the education, experience, and examination requirements of that board.

If you were educated outside the United States, licensing boards may require an evaluation of your educational background to compare your academic qualifications with an accredited U.S. engineering or surveying program.

What is the first step to get my credentials evaluated?

First check the specific requirements of the board to which you are applying for licensure. Once you know what the board requires, submit an online application for an evaluation.

How do I apply for an evaluation?

We strongly encourage you to submit an online application to expedite the application process.

If you cannot submit the application online, complete the Web form, print, and mail or fax the completed application to the Center. There is a $25 processing fee for any application not submitted online.

How much does it cost?

All fees are nonrefundable. For a complete list of services and fees, visit the Fees page.

What kind of records do I need to submit?

Once you have applied, you will receive instructions for requesting academic institutions to send the necessary documentation to the Center. The type of information will include:

  • Your academic transcripts or grade reports
  • Official verification of your degrees or qualifications
  • A signed and sealed Transcript Request Form

Copies of foreign educational credentials are not acceptable.

We also recommend that you submit your high school documents. You should submit official results of your performance on any such as A-levels, Abitur, and International Baccalaureate.

How many copies or sets of each document do you need?

You must submit two sets of each (transcripts, translated documents, diplomas) and one copy of your official syllabus or catalog.

Do I need to provide official translations or can I translate the documents myself?

Translations into English must be performed by the academic institution that issued the official records or by an official translator in your home country or in the United States. An official literal or word-by-word English translation must accompany all records issued in the native language. Translations must mirror the original record and include all data in the same format and order.

How will I know the status of my application?

Once the Center receives an application, evaluators review it to determine its completeness. You will be notified electronically or by mail if additional records are needed.

You can check on the status of your application online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To do so, you will need to go to https://commerce.ncees.org/credentials/eval_status.

How long do I have to complete my file?

Once you have submitted an application, you have six months to complete your file with the required records. After six months, incomplete applications become inactive and require a $75 fee to be reactivated. The Center stores inactive files for one year before destroying them.

How long do you keep copies of my evaluation? May I request additional copies at any time?

Completed evaluations are kept on file indefinitely. You may request additional copies by submitting an online request form with the necessary fees—$60 for an electronic transmittal and $35 for two hard copies.
